I mean, I want my band back, too, but not like that. [Jun. 21st, 2005|03:58 pm]
Lindsey Kuper
I want you to be among the first to know that I have made plans to renew and revive The Smashing Pumpkins. I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams.

I hope that by "renew and revive", he doesn't mean "me, Jimmy, some bloke on guitar, and some chick on bass."

I think it's more like "I can't do anything good on my own even though my ego is larger than the planet Mercury hay everyone come help and I'll take credit again".

I still wish I could have seen them live. But not like this, I agree.

I don't think it's that he can't do anything good on his own. (God knows that when they were a band, he did more than his share.) I think that Billy Corgan just really loves the idea of having a band, even if the band are only there to prop up his vision. Talent would have made him a musician anyway, but he was one of those people who started out deciding that he was going to have a huge rock band and then did it through enormous force of will. And having a huge rock band for the sake of having a huge rock band kind of imploded on him. It's like, as soon as he realized that he was the biggest thing going, he suddenly stopped being that and instead became a caricature of the biggest thing going. Or maybe I made all that up because it made me sound sophisticated. I don't know. I can't blame him for wanting to play those songs again. They were great songs.

Sure, I can see that. And don't get me wrong, I love SP's music. But Billy Corgan always came off as a pretentious ass.

i don't know what that means either.

Re: i don't know what that means either.

Heh, I knew someone would call me on "bloke". Why should the Brits get to hog all the fun words?

Is that mrr's elbow in your icon?

woo! connect four!

Yeah, this Corgan thing is crazy, especially because I was just randomly talking about the Pumpkins with one of our voice talents last night. I guess "So who's going to be in the band?" is the question everyone wants answered.

Translation: "I am, always have been, and always will be the Smashing Pumpkins. Everyone knew that to begin with; the recording credits implied as much. I can't sell albums on my name or under any other name alone anyhow. The pretense was dropped a long time ago and my ego is big enough to believe it."

He could probably rope James in -- being a part of any group fronted by Maynard James Keenan means a lot of downtime between tours and recording.

The pretense of what?

I don't know if he wants James. He's said some pretty crappy things about him.

I mean the pretense of being four individuals on equal footing in the band. I haven't read about him slagging James.

The whole concept isn't that likely to work, though. Reunions these days need at least three out of the original four or five members (see Gang of Four, Pixies, Slint) unless said original members have shuffled off the mortal coil.

Several months ago, Billy publicly blamed James for the breakup of SP on his blog. - matt@matthewgifford.com

he seems like the kind of man who can never be truly happy. If he's a mega rock star, he wants to play small coffeehouses and screech emo poetry over banjo licks, if he's an independent artist, he would rather be at center stage in front of 60,000 screaming fans and have pyro, smoke and a wall of speakers showing his shiny head and his giant touring band.

If he has denim, he'd rather have corduroy. If he has beer, he'd rather have wine.

The problem isn't anything but his insatiable desire for things that he does not have, it seems...if he could pick something and stick with it, he'd find that his fans appreciate not getting jerked around a whole lot more.

Let me add that this is not necessarily a bad thing. His drive for newness is what keeps his music fresh and lets ideas flow* but he's letting his drive for novelty usurp his sense of satisfaction. What happens to his fans after 3 years with a band when he gets bored and wants to play the jug and washboard in a hillbilly gospel group?

His vanity is showing...

*Or so I've heard. I hang out with far too many art students and not enough scientists...

His vanity's always showing.

Well, what happens to anyone's fans when that happens? Some will stick around and some won't. I'd much rather an artist follow his calling rather than keep doing the same thing and getting bored for the sake of his fans.

I guess that in the Pumpkins' case, though, they built up this huge mythology around themselves so that OMG everything they did was a SIGN and had to be carefully examined and analyzed by teeming sixteen-year-olds on message boards. And I think he loves that. That's the part that bothers me -- the whole hero-worship part of it. And so we get this ad in the paper.

I wish he would just start playing the songs again if he wants to play them, but no, it has to be a big production to support the mythology.

I know, right? i mean, bob mould didn't take an ad in the paper when he started playing sugar songs in his solo sets (and he's the kinda guy who will go "i am quitting guitar based music, my signature sound, FOREVER!" and then laugh about it later and say, "hmm. THAT didn't go so well. sugar-guitar is its!").

i think next time wilco wants to play "new madrid" they should take an ad out in the tribune to let people know that tweedy is taking his songs and his dreams back.

Brilliant! Except she needs to be standing in front of a chain-link fence wearing expensive, disheveled clothing.
