Here's some stuff about how Google Maps works. Neat. The comments get kind of ugly, but it's nothing you haven't seen on Slashdot. I like the person who said, "Of course, if Google were REALLY slick, they'd render the marker shadows according to the current position of the sun in relation to the spot on the map." *snigger*

PNG rules, GIF drools

The most interesting thing, to me, is that Google keeps coming up with these "ordinary" services, but doing them with what web designers understand as novel (or at least noteworthy) implementations of the available technology. To the end user, they Just Work...

Yeah. They seem to have a pattern of taking something that's already been done, figuring out exactly what people don't like about it, then doing it better. I think that people have Google brand loyalty, too. (What a concept.)

You linked to Joel's blog in 2005, about four months before he started at the Goog. Do you remember where you found this? ...

Also: both this post and the proto-GWT that Joel and Bruce were working on as you posted it predate the "Ajax" article.
