It's like being asked how telling the truth improves productivity.

I've never quite believed that proprietary software is necessarily ethically wrong. And yet the more I think about it, the more I wonder if open standards aren't just good business practice and good software development practice -- if maybe they're the ethically right thing to do? Why else would I feel so frustrated and tongue-tied when I'm asked to justify their use? It's like being asked how telling the truth improves productivity.
