Bad things:

  • Having our cafeteria in the projects Foster-Walker
  • Having our lab in the Foster-Walker basement
  • Having to teach two completely unrelated courses at the same time
  • Not having time to read other journals or write in my own
  • Not having the slightest idea what's going on in the news
  • Not having time on weekdays to do anything but work
  • Endless phone tag with my friends
  • Permanent sleep deprivation
  • Street parking in Evanston
  • Parking tickets
  • Waiting for DNS to propagate
  • 9-to-5 tech support hours
  • Having to try to explain "why CSS" to a twelve-year-old
  • When my students don't get along with each other
  • When my students who aren't used to Macs leave everything running, then get mad when Digital Performer hangs up
  • When my students start doing something awesome, then get bored and delete it all and start over
  • Elusive ActionScript errors
  • Realizing how immature I can be sometimes
  • Locking the keys in the lab, then having to pay for the locksmith to drill the door open

Good things:

  • Living in a huge, beautiful, ivy-covered house
  • John Vanderslice concerts
  • Meeting cool 27-year-old graphic designers who love John Vanderslice
  • Geek-out conversations with Scott Solter
  • Geek-out conversations with my co-workers
  • My co-workers
  • Wild nights with my co-workers
  • Making French toast the next day with my co-workers
  • Spooning on the couch
  • Ocean's Eleven
  • Students who blow me away with their brilliance
  • Students with an insatiable thirst for knowledge
  • Students who compliment me on my taste in music
  • Students who write awesome things on their end-of-week evaluations
  • Capture the Flag
  • Digital Performer 4's support for changing a sample to match the tempo of a sequence (or the other way around)
  • Dreamweaver MX's support for CSS
  • Dreamweaver layers
  • CSS Zen Garden
  • J. K. Sweet
  • My sister
  • Northwestern University replacing the ruined lock for free
