Oh, hey, I seem to be in Seattle for Grad Cohort!
I'm happy to be here, although it remains hard to shake my fundamental ambivalence about women-in-computing events. On the one hand, to me, gender just doesn't seem like a particularly meaningful way to divide up computer scientists. Dividing us up by research interest, or by phase of career, would be more meaningful.
On the other hand -- and I'm always pleasantly surprised by this -- I really do get something out of it whenever I have a conversation with a group consisting of only women, which is something that pretty much never happens in everyday life, considering that ninety percent of my colleagues are men. And, if nothing else, it's a free trip to a place where hotel rooms apparently contain actual ceramic coffee mugs, actual half and half, and actual Lavazza. That should come in handy in a few hours. |
