Grad Cohort 2010 [Apr. 23rd, 2010|04:20 am]
Lindsey Kuper

Oh, hey, I seem to be in Seattle for Grad Cohort!

I'm happy to be here, although it remains hard to shake my fundamental ambivalence about women-in-computing events. On the one hand, to me, gender just doesn't seem like a particularly meaningful way to divide up computer scientists. Dividing us up by research interest, or by phase of career, would be more meaningful.

On the other hand -- and I'm always pleasantly surprised by this -- I really do get something out of it whenever I have a conversation with a group consisting of only women, which is something that pretty much never happens in everyday life, considering that ninety percent of my colleagues are men. And, if nothing else, it's a free trip to a place where hotel rooms apparently contain actual ceramic coffee mugs, actual half and half, and actual Lavazza. That should come in handy in a few hours.

I found that my Invisible Queers group at PyCon was very valuable for finding programmers I actually liked :)

I don't seem to have a lot of trouble finding programmers that I would like to hang out with. On the other hand, I don't seem to have a lot of trouble finding programmers that I wouldn't like to hang out with, either.
