Made possible by ctrl-C and ctrl-V [Jun. 24th, 2004|08:37 pm]
Lindsey Kuper

Here are a few of the more interesting combinations of interests I have in common with you guys.

Elizabeth gelishan: grinnell college, hugs, introspection, self-respect, singing, terrible puns. (*nods*)

Alex oniugnip: black coffee, cartoons, free software, k&r, linguistics, linux, the jargon file, unix, vegetarianism. (Hot day-um.)

Pam zerbie: love, sex, tom stoppard. (Note: This is awesome.)

I might do another edition of this later.

*laughs* Indeed... I think there's a pretty specific personality type that goes in for that sort of thing, but then again, I know 3/5 of the people who've got "k&r" as an interest :)

Heh, sweet. But maybe I ought to un-list it, for the sake of honesty ... I haven't cracked my K&R in months.

Fun. I think I might do this later. (Lindsey starts a meme!) (It reminds me, though, that I haven't updated my interests in a while; they could probably stand an update.)

Well, if it's going to become popular, it's going to have to be easier to do. That was a lot of copying and pasting, there.

Hmm. If I understood how to connect to the LJ database and where to find all the stuff I needed in it, I could program something that spits out a list of all of one's friends and the interests one has in common with them (sorted, say, in decreasing order of number of interests in common). But the database is huge and scary.

There are a lot of things I don't know. I'm going to have to do some research. I suspect there are communities who help each other write these things ...

Heh. *nerd alert* This comment was sitting in my inbox *forever* because that day I started to write a utility to do this and only got about half way through. Cleaning out my inbox is a *good thing*, and I doubt I'll ever finish it, so there goes that. What you'd actually need to do is hit is interestdata.bml, not the database directly. This page describes how LiveJournal wants people to handle getting various data that isn't part of the protocol. It's all pretty straightforward, but I got distracted from the whole thing around the point where I would have had to set up a little database to cache the results on my end, as LJ requests that you do that.

How's that for a completely random comment about something you've undoubtedly long forgotten about? :)

Dude, I *just now* saw this, because I don't have comment notification emails turned on. This seems really interesting! I should give it a shot at some point, and I would love if you could help me with it.

It did. And I'm doing it again, which is why I'm just now seeing this.

I'm glad that someone besides me has used my tags.
