A coming-out party for my hair [Jul. 18th, 2009|08:25 pm]
Lindsey Kuper

And there are, in fact, going to be two cats in the yard.

I got a haircut today that made me feel great.

After having had a lot of haircuts over the years that only ever looked good the day I got them, I had kind of despaired of ever having nice hair. That was part of my motivation for getting a buzz cut last year -- because if my hair was never going to look good, then maybe the lack of it might. I liked having a buzz cut; I recommend that everyone try it sometime. But I didn't do a good job of maintaining it, and it hasn't grown out so well, and so I've spent a lot of the intervening year with terrible, sloppy hair.

And, you know, it's not important; if terrible hair is all I have to complain about, I count myself as very lucky indeed. But when you're a 27-year-old woman whose hair has gotten so sloppy that even middle-aged computer science professors are giving you hair stylist recommendations, it's probably time to do something about it.

So, after reading good reviews in the bloomington community, I came to Ashleigh at Mira today with my hair in its natural state and asked for a style that would complement that natural state. I didn't bring a picture, or anything like that; I just explained that I'd had a lot of haircuts that tried to make my hair into something it isn't, and that now that I've come to terms with the fact that my hair isn't straight, I just wanted a hair style that would cooperate with it, not fight it. She understood exactly what I was talking about, and she gave me a cut that will look presentable, and maybe even stylish, without products or blow drying. Finally!

Oh, God, the Onslaught. I'm already bracing myself for it. Over the summer I've gotten so used to, you know, being able to find a place to sit in the library.

We'll have internets and our own studies at the house (house!!), so maybe finding a place to sit at the library will be less of an issue...

(that, and we get Lindley desks?)

Oh, you'll probably get a desk in Lindley if you smile sweetly at Lucy. As for me, I think I might get, like, half a chair cleared off for me in Dan's office.

(It's true, we'll have study spaces at the house! But I like the library.)
