Apocalypse buddies [Jul. 30th, 2008|12:51 pm]
Lindsey Kuper

(After roller skating last night, Paul stereotype441 and Monica keystricken and I drop Stacy stacy_bird off at her house. We sit in Paul's car and watch her go inside.)

"Hey, Paul."
"Yeah."
"You know that time that you said that there are some people you just want good things to happen to, and that you felt that way about my sister?"
"Yeah."
"Well, I feel that way about Stacy."
"Yeah, I know what you mean."
"..."
"..."
"I mean, not that I don't want good things to happen to the rest of you."
"But Stacy is the person you would protect, come the apocalypse?"
"We have to pick just one person?"
"This will never work. Everyone will pick Stacy, except Paul, who will pick my sister."
"No. Amariah will pick Jesse. And Amariah is probably the best apocalypse buddy you could have."
"True."
"Wait. When I pick my apocalypse buddy, am I picking the person I most want to protect, or the person I want to protect me?"
"Good question."
"It depends on your personality."
"And Paul will pick...Jenn?"
"I fully expect Jenn to start the apocalypse."

Goddamnit. I still can't read conversations like this. Can't people put in some kind of color-coding so I know which person is speaking when?

Literally, whenEVER I read a conversation in which the difference between the speakers isn't identified, I need to read it out loud to myself using a high voice and a low voice, or I lose track of which person is saying what. And it usually takes me a couple tries to get it right.

Man, I knew you wouldn't like this.

If it helps, don't think of it as a conversation; think of it as a collection of things that were said, arranged in an order that I found aesthetically pleasing.

The ambiguity is part of the point. I don't remember what each of us said, either.

Re: Man, I knew you wouldn't like this.

I had an argument about whether there were the speakers' names explicitly listed on each line.

Apparently I was wrong.
I'm still convinced that it is entirely transparent who said what

Um, wow. That totally made me cry. Y'all rock.

Oh, and I think I would probably be a little useful in case of the apocalypse. :)

Wherever in the midwest you are at this exact moment, Lindsey, thinking of you, and grinning.

fifth element

A little useful? pshh. You'd probably stop the apocalypse cold with your unrestrainable joy glinting off the toothy grins of everyone around you. Then take a nap in a nice tree.
