Grinnelligentsia [Nov. 12th, 2007|08:39 pm]
Lindsey Kuper

Recently, some people on Plans have been discussing how to make it easier to find Grinnell folks' blogs. One Plans user, a person I don't know but whose contributions to Geek Buffet I read and enjoy, has made an image for Grinnellians to add to their blogs to show that they're Grinnellians. She wrote, "It would be awesome if Grinnell bloggers would put it out there with their other networking buttons. Represent!" It looks like this:

Let me be clear. I love Grinnell. I love Grinnellians. And I love intelligence. But to me, this says, "Hey, I went to Grinnell! Look how clever I am." I can't imagine anyone, Grinnellian or otherwise, who wouldn't find that message distasteful.

Still, I might have forgotten about the whole thing. But then, Andrew pixelherder, whom I also respect a great deal, and for whom I believe aliasing artifacts cause actual physical pain, wrote, "Sigh. I find this kind of thing rather annoying, but if you've got to do it, at least do it well," and provided his own version:

That's when I knew I had to get in on the act, too. I couldn't be first, and I couldn't be best, but darn it, I could be snarky. So, I fired up my aging copy of Fireworks, downloaded me some Silkscreen, and threw together an image that demonstrates how I personally feel -- not about Grinnell, nor about myself, but about the notion of putting a "Look, I went to Grinnell and I'm smart" emblem on my blog:

The creator of the original image called my bluff and suggested I actually display this image on my blog. Okay, here it is.

Hee! Now I wish I went to Grinnell and could display your icon on my blog. Alas.

Nah. All that's required is a ha-ha-only-serious mindset and a willingness to put a goofy icon on your blog.

I can't tell you how tickled I am to see the 20th century webring make a comeback, with the fresh stink of web 2.0.

If there has to be a badge, I agree that it should just say "Grinnell" or (better) "Grinnellian." Because in most cases the badge-wearer isn't going to be blogging about Grinnell.

However, I question the need for a badge at all. What is it supposed to link to? Anything? Nothing? The Grinnell badge would be a bunch of vestigial pixels with no clear purpose, unlike cousin web 2.0 badges that generally perform some useful function when you click on them.

When I was in grad school, you never had to ask someone if they went to an expensive, small school. They would always tell you, and everyone. Repeatedly.

Maybe having a button with something like "G NETWORK" would be better? The people who are in the know will know, but the people who aren't won't care and won't think the G NETWORK button user is being snooty.

if we didn't want to say "look how clever I am!", why are we using the internet at all?

I lay in bed last night trying to think of a similar image for Reed.
My favorite is the last one.

I admit that I do tend to wince when I see aliasing. I was sad when I watched the original Shrek again and noticed shadow map aliasing.

But please don't take my version as condoning what the button implies. I only did it because the original was staring me in the face every time I logged into plans and looked starkly out of place. I figured I'd have a better chance of getting it replaced with a less jarring image than removed entirely. I don't seem to have been successful, however. I do rather like your version, though.

I should also mention that the entire time that I was doing it, I was reminded of the time freshman year when I gave another a student a crash course on Photoshop because I couldn't stand the pitiful way they were botching their attempt to fake a ID with it.

And while I'm at it, here's sonetka's riff on it:

Harumph - I too felt that while said idea was lofted in a well-intentioned fashion in that they had intended to inspire community... it just felt off-center and too elitist for even me. Besides, I have long preferred Kevin Cannon (http://www.kevincannon.org/)'s interpretation of things. $omething about $cholarship. Ten points to anyone who can deep link to the particular episode of "Johnny Cavalier" that I am trying to reference on his website... I would ferret it out, but I am supposed to be working.

Re: grinnellephant

Well done, link-finder. I couldn't do it.

I adore Kevin's comics, but this one makes me sad. That's not why I went to Grinnell.
