I wasn't aware that we published textbooks about organic chemistry and snowboard moves [Dec. 15th, 2006|04:41 pm]

From the TOC of the orgo book I'm working on: "Section 6.5: Frontside or Backside Attack? Stereochemistry of the SN2 Reaction".

Oh, we always figured the SN2 reaction was more about gay sex.

According to this, "Concerted attack on a chiral R reactant from the back gives an S product". Oh, baby.

From my point of view, the content of this book is even more befuddling than the P-chem one. Ordinarily, I'd be fixing typos and stuff as I went along, but how would I know if there were a typo in, say, "635trans,cis,trans-2,4,6-Octatriene"? Or, for instance, "SN2" up there is actually supposed to be "SN2". "SN2" might mean nothing, which would be bad enough, or it might be a completely different reaction, which would be much worse! And I would have no way of knowing.

Luckily, we do have lots of proofreaders and QA folks. I hope they're good at chemistry.

I had thought that maybe they were just trying to be cute, but it turns out that "frontside attack" and "backside attack" are technical terms. I love when science does that.
