Monday: Instead of going to bed, I, um, sort of went to Seattle with Jesse jes5199 and Michael jonatthebar for a midnight show and record release thing. If I could have chosen any two people with whom to spend four-times-two hours in a car trying to stay awake, I could hardly have done better than Jesse and Mike. I lost track of all the interesting conversations we had. And the show was worth the trip, of course, although I really hope JD got to go to sleep before we did. He already seemed kind of tired -- it was the middle of the night, after all -- and then eight hundred kids lined up to get stuff signed.
Tuesday: Leigh the_great_leigh, Electra eliciel, and Meghan nutmeg4821 came over to make sushi! Considering how hard it was to get extremely sticky rice into a thin and even layer, I have a new appreciation for the skill involved in making inside-out rolls, which we didn't attempt. I was proud of how our rolls turned out, though. They might not have looked entirely professional, but they certainly tasted good. As far as the "make Lindsey's kitchen smell like a sushi joint for a few hours" challenge went, I think we nailed it.
Wednesday: After eight weeks of doing the same thing at the gym three times a week, I decided to rearrange my workout and try some new things. It mostly went okay, but I was disappointed to discover that I still don't have the abdominal strength to use the ab machine they've got. I can't really even do a sit-up, let alone one with weight. Most of the other lifting I'm doing is going well, though. I can't say enough good things about lifting weights. I've got little muscles popping out on my arms and shoulders that weren't there two months ago, and, well, it's really exciting. The muscles themselves aren't as important as the realization that I'm actually kind of in control of this aspect of myself. Given time and effort, I can make my body do things! It's so cool.
Thursday: I biked over to Jesse's neighborhood, to a house a few blocks away from his and Amariah anonamyst's place where they and their friends were gaming and drinking. I'm as bad at poker as ever, but it was really exciting when someone I had never met actually said, "Hey, you do Shoebox Full of Tapes, right?" That warmed my cynical old hiatus-taking heart. If that kind of thing ever stops being awesome, I'll know it's time to quit for real.
Friday: Went to the Fireside, where I spent twenty minutes talking to some guy who needed help fixing a really old Dell laptop which he had found on a junk pile. I didn't really have the slightest idea what to tell him, and there's honestly not much hope for the computer, but I realized that, hey, maybe it wouldn't kill me to engage in random conversations with strangers a little more often. Which led to:
Saturday: Today I was on the bus over to Inner Sound to get one errant key on the Korg fixed. It's a pretty big thing to be carrying around on the bus, and I was completing a lot of "Is that a..." queries with "Keyboard, yeah." Then one guy actually undertook to continue the conversation from there, and I actually undertook to do the same, and I'm not sure how it happened, but over the course of fifteen minutes on the bus, we ended up going from music to politics to math to isn't-Portland-great to our phone numbers and now we seem to be going to the Doug Fir to see Menomena tonight. Isn't Portland great?
