The Passing of the Lasagna Recipe [Nov. 24th, 2005|12:53 pm]

In preparation for Roy royhuggins's Thanksgiving feast at Joe karzon's house, I asked my mom for her lasagna recipe. This is the lasagna I was raised on, and as far as I'm concerned, it's the standard by which all other lasagna is judged.

She sent me a thousand-word letter encompassing the recipe for the lasagna, the recipe for the sauce with which to make the lasagna, how to tweak ingredients and amounts, advice on buying ingredients, preparation notes, baking notes...pretty much the collected wisdom of decades of making this lasagna. The recipe originally came from Laurel's Kitchen, but hers has been so comprehensively tweaked and annotated that it deserves to be published in its own right. And Will terror_firma's been nagging me to add to KitchenKnight, so here it is. I just got done making it for the first time, and I think it turned out pretty well!

Hey, I have a suggestion! There should be a field for cooking time as well as prep time. Moreover, I should be allowed to fill in my own value for both of those (what if it's a range? what if it varies based on whether you're a novice or a pro?).

And while I'm invoking Lawrence Lessig, how about an option to Creative Commons license a recipe as you're posting it? It would have to meet the requirements for licensing (original work, etc.), and providing all the different applicable options might be a pain in the ass, but I'm sure you could figure out an elegant way to do it.

Hopefully soon! I admire your restraint; I wouldn't last long without cheese in my life.
