Subject: Qualifying exam

Dear Lindsey:

Congratulations on passing your qualifying exam in the Computer Science Ph.D. program (you passed Systems this year).

Official note (same text as above) coming soon to your mailbox.

Best,
(name)

Aaaaaaaaaah, that's better. Two years is a long time to hold your breath.

Qualifying exams have always seemed particularly mean to me, so I too am glad and relieved to hear that you have made it through. Congratulations!

Thanks, everyone!

This isn't the last hoop I have to jump through -- I still have to pass an oral qualifier exam sometime this year, which will entail sitting in a room with a few professors of my choice and being grilled about programming language topics for an hour or two. That doesn't really sound so different from everyday life, though.
