Lindsey Kuper

A first for me: "The compiler doesn't care what you're wearing" is the guest post on the Geek Feminism blog today. Thanks to everyone who shared it on Google Reader or found it thought-provoking.

Whatever one might think about the current state of LJ, the new "access denied" screen is beautiful. I like the rendition of Frank a lot.

The new 404 page has a crying Frank. I like that one rather less.

Nifty. I'm gonna post that to reddit.

Edit: It's getting upvotes and comments.

Yup! 2XC might be my favorite subreddit. We also have an IRC channel on irc.freenode.net, if you ever IRC then come drop by (I'm "cos" there, too).

The pink and the hearts and all that are kind of weirding me out. However, I fully appreciate that my reaction could be considered hypocritical, given the context of my just having written an article about wanting to wear girly clothes to work.

In any case, though, I really like this, and if I were on reddit I would upvote it a million times:

Reacting against superficial appearance-obsessed mainstream/business culture, geek culture goes overboard... and sometimes instead of simply disregarding appearances, actually views people who look like they take care of their appearance with mild suspicion[.]

Heh. Indeed, a subreddit should be allowed to show up to work wearing a pink femmey skin if it feels like it! :)

P.S. Come join reddit! I note that username lindseykuper isn't taken yet.

This is just further evidence that the whole world is conspiring to make me fail at getting my project done before my internship ends in A WEEK AND A HALF OH DEAR GOD.

I guess it depends how you define "well-groomed". A lot of your friends and loved ones look well-groomed to me. Some of them even look like they make regular trips to a hair salon (gasp!). If you didn't know those people, would you be suspicious of them?

oh, well, when I moved to Portland I gave up my rights to be suspicious of overt counterculture signifiers. So such people get a free pass, these days.
and some of my friends and loved ones are people who I was initially suspicious of!
