I approve...sort of. [Feb. 18th, 2010|12:37 am]
Lindsey Kuper

I like the 2010 Grace Hopper Celebration poster because it is recognizably an illustration of Midtown Atlanta, and, moreover, because it actually has Grace Hopper on it. Also because it doesn't scream "Breasts! Tiny waists! Vague, ineffectual hand gestures!" like the 2008 one did.

Of course, for a few years now they've been putting the white chick in the middle and making her the tallest. Okay, so, speaking as the white chick, I usually am the tallest. But that doesn't mean I should always get to type.

I remember Christy complaining about that 2008 one, but I just now noticed that the one on the left is... summoning the water with her ineffectual hand gesture. She's a Planeteer!

(You can be one too! Cause saving our planet is the thing to do! etc etc.)

I do approve the actual inclusion of Adm. Grace Hopper! That's actually quite awesome.

Actually, the gestures on the left and in the middle don't bother me so much, because at least they're actually doing something. The one on the right, though, is just sort of vaguely holding her hand in the air. And her hand appears to be a...light source? Either that, or she's a vampire, because it sure ain't casting a shadow.

I'm not sure what it says about me, but my first reaction on clicking the link to the cover was "Gah! Who thought it was a good idea to use a vector format as a container for a raster image?!"

I remember the horror of 2008, when giant legless women swatted gps satellites like flies. I lost a lot of money on my Garmin stock that year.

Yeah, the weird thing is that you and I don't seem to know one another.

In retrospect, that is, in fact, pretty bizarre! I'd say 'we should fix this,' but I doubt you are in the same place I am.

I don't know if you're speaking of 'place' in a metaphysical sense or not, but you and Chris underwhelm are both in Minneapolis.

...and you had told me that, even, but I had forgotten. I was not being metaphysical, I was being literal. WELL THEN PERHAPS WE *SHOULD* FIX THAT.

This phrase caught my attention

Context? I feel like I have read/heard it before, but I can't remember or Google it....

Re: оченавь даже

But what exactly is the "everything" that you think she is right about? And does she speak Russian? And more importantly, why can I read and understand this after two years of college Russian 3 years ago?
