You probably all figured this out ten years ago [Nov. 22nd, 2005|03:13 pm]
Lindsey Kuper

In high school, I was always in awe of the kids who went out all the time and were in tons of activities and never seemed to run out of energy for it. I figured there was something wrong with me because I didn't want to go out all the time.

Well, I've been talking about high school with some of my friends lately, and I'm just now figuring out that maybe the reason some of those kids were always, always out doing stuff was that, for them, being at home was awful.

And realizing just how damn lucky I was.

I'd had it in my mind for a while, but only because of a girl I knew in high school who was just like that - in every club you can imagine, very social, stuff like that. She ended up getting into Scientology and doesn't seem to have much life outside it now; I wondered at the time why she did it, but eventually heard a lot from others about what a chaotic home she had and her parents were never there for her and so forth. She went from outgoing and enviable (to me) to someone who left school for the Scienos in the space of a couple of months. Something less dramatic would probably have never even caught my attention, though.

I was a metalhead who had long hair, slacked off and smoked a pack a day in high school.

Now I am a downbeathead with short hair who slacks off and can't afford a pack-a-day habit.

Ah.... Plus ca change, plus c’est la même chose...
